Littleton, N.H.
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “S L Gerry.”; undated
Oil on canvas, laid on artist board (11 1/2 x 20 in.)
Collection of P. Andrews and Linda H. McLane

Unusual in Gerry’s work is this town view of Littleton, situated slightly northwest of the White Mountains. The First Congregational Church and Thayer’s Hotel are visible against the sky. This oil sketch is similar but not identical to a pencil sketch of the same scene attributed to Gerry’s daughter Martha and labeled “Littleton / N.H.” With his wife and two daughters, Gerry is known to have stayed at the Oak Hill House in Littleton in July 1883, although the group probably visited the area at other times as well.
