Mount Mansfield
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Unsigned and undated, circa 1866–67
Oil on canvas (10 x 20 in.)
Collection of Charles and Gloria Vogel

Gerry produced oil sketches both in the field and in Boston as studies for larger, sometimes commissioned, works. This piece is believed to be an example of a surviving oil sketch that Gerry used to create an almost identical, larger, signed painting. The scene has been identified as Mount Mansfield near Stowe, Vermont. Gerry is known to have been sketching in the Stowe vicinity in 1866 and to have exhibited a painting of Mount Mansfield at the Boston Athenaeum the following year.
