As early as 1837, Gerry was exhibiting and receiving awards for his miniatures, but by the mid-1840s, as Gerry himself later recalled in his 1891 essay “Old Masters of Boston,” this “lovely” art had “died outright when the photograph began to multiply and cover the face of the earth.”
