While on his summer trips, Gerry filled his sketchbooks with all kinds of images, which would become the basis of paintings once he got back in his Boston studio in the late fall. There is no indication that Gerry intended the figure in this sketch to depict himself, but he likely bore a resemblance to this lone walker in the White Mountains.
