Samuel Lancaster Gerry (1813-91)

Gerry is pictured here when he was about 50 years old. This is the only photograph of him known to survive today. This so-called gem (or very small-sized) tintype, popular especially in the 1860s, descended in the family of Gerry’s sister Catharine. There is no identification on the tintype, but the image is consistent with a description of Gerry provided on a passport application a few years earlier.
