Lowney Bros. & Co. Trade Cards
Chromolithographs by Jean L. Bognard, Paris
circa 1880
Collection of the New Hampshire Historical Society

In the 1870s and 1880s small, colored, lithographed trade cards were produced as advertisements. Frequently, they did not actually depict the product or business being promoted, which in this case was a candy store. At the time these cards were produced, the image of the artist at work outdoors was so commonplace that a general audience would appreciate this parody.
