Landscape painter Samuel W. Grigg was Gerry’s neighbor in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and the two men occupied studio spaces near one another in both the Mercantile Building and the Tremont Studio Building. Griggs frequently joined Gerry, Asher B. Durand, George Loring Brown, and Albert Bierstadt on summer painting trips in the Franconia Mountains during the 1850s and 1860s. Griggs captured a forbidding Mount Lafayette shrouded in mist on one of his trips to the White Mountains.
