Founded by Gerry and his fellow artists in 1854, the Boston Art Club showcased the work of American artists at a time when many art patrons were focused on European art. The club thus helped promote a greater appreciation for America—both its scenery and its talent. The group met casually in its early years, but by the early 1880s it had established more formal headquarters in this building, located in the heart of Back Bay, just a block from the Boston Public Library. It was dubbed the Club House and served as a gathering place for both artists and art collectors, as well as a prestigious exhibition venue.
